The test takes approximately four hours; test time plus registration and admittance takes approximately five hours. The test will take place twice per day; one test in the morning and one test in the afternoon.
Test in the morning
If you attend the test in the morning, please arrive for registration at the test centre on the test day at 8.15 am at the latest (the invitation letter states the test centre where your test will take place). Admittance to the test room is between 8.30 am and 8.45 am. In the test room you will receive the log-in data for the online test as well as any important information of processing of the test. Then – between 8.45 am and 9.00 am – the test will start.
Later admittance will not be possible. Usually, the test will end around 1.00 pm. When travelling by train or plane, please provide for sufficient time because we will not reimburse any additional costs for cancellation, change etc. caused by a later end of the test.
Test in the afternoon
If you attend the test in the afternoon, please arrive for registration at the test centre on the test day at 1.45 pm at the latest (the invitation letter states the test centre where your test will take place). Admittance to the test room is between 2.00 pm and 2.15 pm. In the test room you will receive the log-in data for the online test as well as any important information of processing of the test. Then – between 2.15 pm and 2.30 pm – the test will start.
Later admittance will not be possible. Usually, the test will end around 6.30 pm. When travelling by train or plane, please provide for sufficient time because we will not reimburse any additional costs for cancellation, change etc. caused by a later end of the test.
At the test date you will need a valid photo identification, your invitation letter and pens.
You will need a valid official photo identification (preferably your ID card or passport; please note that the student ID card is not an official photo identification) as well as your invitation letter for your registration at the test centre. Photo identification and the invitation letter will be checked at registration; then, you will receive a stamp on the back of your hand as well as the information on the room where your test will be performed as well as on the place where you can deposit the objects that are not allowed at the work desks.
At the work desk you should have available your photo identification as well as the invitation letter, pens and notepaper are provided. During test processing, the photo identification and the invitation letter must be placed in the upper right part of your table. This is the only way to ensure that the test is not made under a false name.
Eating and drinking is prohibited at the PC work desks. After admittance, your food and/or drinks can be placed and – during the test – consumed on separate tables. Bags, jackets, coats, headgears1, books, watches, calculators, writing utensiles, text markers, cameras in all forms, mobile phones, one’s own notice paper, MP3 players, writing cases, spectacle cases, mascots and the like are not allowed at the work desk and must be deposited at the correspondingly provided places. If you need special auxiliary means due to health reasons, please register such means in advance; these means should be registered preferably during the registration period. Medications do not require registration.
Start of the test
When all persons in the test room arrived at their work desks, you will receive a concept paper brochure as well as your personal access data for the test system. Both papers must not leave the test room; they must be carefully kept until the end of the test and then they must be handed back. You must also write your name on the concept paper brochure in order to ensure that no copy will leave the test centre.
Before the start of the test, the test supervisor will check attendance and will provide some general information on processing. Then, he will ask you to log-in into the online system and to start processing of the test. You are only allowed to open the concept paper brochure after start of processing of the test.
At the beginning of each group of exercises the processing information will be displayed maximally for one minute; then, the processing time will start.
During the time intended for a certain group of exercises you may only navigate within this group of exercises. This will also apply if you already processed all exercises, but the time for processing of this group of exercises has not elapsed yet. You may change your answers and/or go back to exercises not processed yet; you may also skip exercises. Use the "Mark" button to mark certain exercises. This way you will easily find any marked exercises if you want to return to these exercises at a later point in time. You may finish a group of exercises before the end of the processing time. In this case, the system will display a pop-up window asking whether you really want to finish this group of exercises. If you confirm this pop-up window, this group of exercises will be finished. After finishing of a group of exercises it will not be possible any more to process any exercises and/or to change or check your answers, even if you marked certain exercises by means of the "Mark" button. Marking of individual exercises does not have any impact on the evaluation. Please make sure that you do not accidentally finish a group of exercises too early. If the processing time of a group of exercises has elapsed, then processing of this group of exercises will be automatically ended. Also in this case, processing of exercises marked by means of the "Mark" button will not be possible any more.
After completion of a group of exercises, you may start the next group of exercises. If you do not start the next group of exercises within 5 minutes, the next group of exercises will automatically start. This means that you have a maximum break of 5 minutes between the groups of exercises.
All exercises are based on the so-called multiple-choice principle. Each problem states several possible answers or solution proposals; only one out of the stated answers/solutions is correct. Use your mouse to tick the box that corresponds to the correct answer. If you note that you ticked a wrong box, just tick the box with the answer you consider correct. Then, the previous marking will be deleted automatically. Only one answer can be ticked for each exercise. You should tick an answer with each exercise. If the time is not sufficient for processing of all exercises or if you are not able to solve an exercise, just tick an answer at random. There are no negative points for wrong answers or non-processed exercises. The test supervisor will not answer any questions on the contents of the individual exercises as the understanding of the individual exercises already forms part of the test requirements.
Breaks / Leaving the test room
You may leave your desk if you need to go to the bathroom or if you want to eat or drink. The processing time for a group of exercise cannot be stopped in this case. Please do not disturb the other persons taking the test.
For reasons of trouble-free test performance, please only leave the test room if you want to go to the bathroom. When going to the bathroom, please be as silent as possible so that the other test participants will not be disturbed. If you left the test room, please present to the test supervisor the stamp on the back of your hand without being asked when re-entering the test room.
If you finish the test much earlier than the other participants in your test room, please be silent and do not disturb the other persons. You may leave the room. However, if several persons want to leave the room simultaneously and this results in disturbance, the test supervisor will be required to ask you to stay at your desk until all participants have finished the test.
If a technical problem occurs at your desk, please contact the test supervisor. If the internet is down in the whole test centre, the test can be further processed by using test booklets.
A participant that feels impaired (e.g. by loud noise) should notify this to the test supervisor. The test supervisor will try to remedy the situation and will enter your claim into the test minutes.
Retake of the test
The TM-BASE can be taken several times. However, the test can only be taken once per year. If you already took the TM-BASE before, this will be noted on your certificate. If you want to know which TM-BASE result will be used by your selected university, please contact this university by yourself (presumably, the latest test result will be used).
1Exceptions are possible e.g. in case of headgears and garments, that are worn for religious reasons. However, it must be ensured at any point in time of the test execution that the supervisor can prove the participant's identity. Moreover, it has to be excluded that the items can be used for any violation of the test rules.
The registration phase for the test dates in 2019 has started on 8 January. Early registration is recommended so that you will be able to take the test at your preferred location and time.
The registration phase for the test date on 29 June 2019 ends on 11 June!
Dates, deadlines and test locations are stated here.
As of the winter semester 2019/2020 the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences is considerin the results of the TM-BASE for its Masters' Programme Accounting and Finance (M.Sc.).
Important: If you want to apply for this programme you need to take the TM-BASE in English.
The prognostic power of TM-BASE has been proven in a scientific study with 247 master’s graduates. The test result predicts the final grade very well: The correlation between the test result and the final grade is r = .44.
